Field Trip #2 Ordover Gallery: Kim Zuill

Another artist that caught my attention was Kim Zuill. Since one of the series were supposed o focus on this semester is flora, I was able to learn a lot on how other artist are able to capture flora pictures. Zuill's photos of flowers was very playful. She was able to manipulate her subject in a interesting way. She gets up close and zooms in on different areas of the flower and manipulate it in an artistic way which is very interesting. I like how she uses a black background on the flower, it gives a blank space as if the flower is just floating up there. Also the use of the black space was a smart technique because it does not take away the attention from the flower.

Field Trip #1 Ordover Gallery: Abe Ordover

I went to the Ordover Gallery over the weekend. The gallery was filled with pictures, mostly from the photographer named Abe Ordover. Most of the pictures he took looked like they were hand painted which was really interesting. Ordover is very skilled in creating that illusion of making the audience think they are looking at a painting, but in reality are actually looking at a taken photograph. Most of his photographs are of people, nature, landscape and animals. His animal pictures really caught my eye. The timing and the way he captured the animals in their habitats is really interesting. It is amazing on how most of his pictures of animals are kind of looking directly at the camera. I don't know how up close he got in taking those pictures, but it still amazing that photographers are able to take pictures of animals on the spot like that, let alone producing a quality picture that is really clear and up on your face that you can almost touch it.

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon is a very interesting photographer. Avedon has a talent for shooting his portraits of people on a plane white background. Even though there is no background or setting in his work, Avedon was able to capture the character and the personality of his subject onto a plane background. It is very interesting how he is able to capture the character and personality of his subjects by having them look directly into the camera. In his work, you can sense the emotion of his subjects and have a sense of what they are feeling.

Black & White / Split Tone

Rick Smolan

Rick Smolan is a very inspiring man who talked about his stories and journeys he's been on since he became a photographer. Rick went on these different trips visiting different countries all around the world doing what he is passionate about which is taking pictures. He talks about how his career as a photographer completely took off by taking on these projects and getting his name out there in the world. As an inspiring artist, he opened my eyes by talking about the work he's done, the difficulties he had to overcome, and how he manages to pull through with a bit of luck at the end.
